Marketing

Independent films and Blockbuster films are obviously marketed in a very different way.
For example. The film4 film "This is England" is marketed in a very different way to "the Dark Knight". On the poster for This is England, it is noted as "A film by Shane Meadows". This is showing that the director and writer of the film is more famous than any of the actors in it, even though film4 is only an independent film company. This isn't true with most blockbuster films. They are often more focussed on the actors names who are within the film, for example; Batman is Christian Bale, Alfred is Micheal Caine and the Joker is Heath Ledger. The film's poster only shows the Dark Knight standing in front of a building with a burning version of the Batman sign. Contrasting the "This is England" poster shows all the main characters. Also, blockbusting films often have big premiers for publicity and to gain interest as well as profit, with the main actors appearing. This is the case for the "Dark Knight". The marketing for an independent film like "This is England" usually just includes posters, trailers and sometimes the films appear in film festivals which help gain interest. The trailer for This is England mostly shows the happy sides of the film, and towards the end shows the darker sides. This is because viewers might possibly be put off by the trailer making the whole film seem dark and depressing. This shows the film as not just a completely happy or completely dark film, but it having multiple sides to it which can enhance the amount of relation the audience can have to each character. This is contrasted by the trailer for the "Dark Knight", which really only shows a montage of the most exciting parts of the film, therefore drawing in the target audience.
